Citizenship at EPCHS

Citizenship Lead – Ms Edwards

The Citizenship curriculum for EPCHS has been developed in line with the statutory teaching requirements taken from the DFE programmes of study for Citizenship at key stages 3 and 4.   Citizenship has a unique and distinct role in supporting the overarching aims of the National Curriculum.  It not only has a role as a subject but also in contributing to school and community life.

The Citizenship education provision at EPCHS involves developing the knowledge, skills and confidence to enable our students to make their own decisions and to take responsibility for their own lives and communities they are part of.  In particular, Citizenship education will foster our students’ keen awareness and understanding of democracy, government and how laws are made and upheld.  The process of being taught Citizenship is essential for strengthening and safeguarding our society and democratic way of life.  At EPCHS we want young people to leave formal education with a strong grasp of the political, legal and economic functions of society, and with the social and moral awareness to thrive in it.

The aims of our Citizenship curriculum describe what students should be able to do as positive contributors to democracy and society who are able to think critically, debate and reflect on political questions.

To ensure students acquire a sound knowledge of and understanding of how the United Kingdom is governed, its political systems and how citizens participate actively in its democratic systems of government.

  • For students to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of the role of law and the justice system in our society and how these laws are shaped and enforced.

  • For students to develop an interest in, and commitment to, participation in volunteering as well as other forms of responsible activity, that they will take with them into adulthood.

  • To equip students with the skills to think critically, debate political issues and enable them to manage their money on a day-to-day basis, and plan for future financial needs.
